After leaving CGS, Fergus undertook a degree in Physiotherapy at Cumberland College (now part of Sydney University). He initially worked in Albury-Wodonga before working as Physio to the Australian Cricket team from 1982 to 1984. Fergus married in 1983 and after the birth of his first child, moved to Forbes where he ran his own private practice for 10 years.
In 1995 he travelled around Europe with his wife and three children before returning to Canberra. Fergus then worked for a number of physiotherapy practices until 2008 when he bought a franchise to become part of Just Better Care. The business has grown rapidly since that time and now employs over 100 staff, providing services to people with disabilities and the elderly.
In 2014, Just Better Care Canberra won the Employer Award at the Australian Training Awards for the training program it provides to its staff. In 2011, Fergus remarried and he and wife Ann now live in Kingston and have four children and three grandchildren.
