Canberra Grammar School has recently released the following announcement to its community. The School is unable to comment further on the case or its legal proceedings.
To all in the School community,
You may recall from previous communications that the School has been working with police and a number of former students for some time to bring to justice a former staff member accused of behaving inappropriately towards students in the early 1980s. Having pleaded guilty to all charges, the former staff member has now been sentenced to prison for six years with a non-parole period of four years.
While no sentence can make up for the impact on victims, it is my sincere hope that the knowledge that justice has been done may bring some solace and opportunity for healing to those affected. The School stands ready, if wanted, to be a part of that, and I am grateful to all who have been active in bringing this matter forward. That includes former students, staff and police.
Please be aware that the names of all involved have been legally suppressed to protect the privacy of the former students concerned. For the same reason, I will not detail what they endured. It is distressing and they have my most profound sorrow, personally and on behalf of the School. They also have my great respect and gratitude for all that has been entailed in pursuing the investigation and in making statements about matters so deeply private and painful.
As I have said in past e-mails on this matter and to students in Senior School assemblies, it must be a reminder for us always to be vigilant and to ensure that our students understand their rights to privacy and to physical and emotional respect. It is also vital that they feel confident in raising any matters that worry them with their parents or teachers, with the School Counsellors and pastoral staff, or indeed with external authorities.
As before, I welcome personal contact and I provide contact details below for our Counsellors, Chaplain and key senior leadership staff, bearing in mind that School Reception will be our most accessible contact number for much of the current School holidays. I also provide contact details for the Diocesan Support Line, ACT Child and Youth Protection Services and for ACT Police as well as other support services.
